Star Trek The Next Generation A Fistful Of Datas -

Plot

When a supply ship is a day late, the Enterprise crew has an unexpected day to kill in leisure. Geordi and Data get permission to do an experiment, taking the main computer off line a few hours and Data's circuit running various systems, but a small physical burn-out in Data causes a series of malfunctions in him, such as his vocabulary and voice aberrations, but also various glitches in the many functions of the ship's computer, such as keeping track of recordings of say Picard's flute music or the text of a play Crusher and Riker are in. It's worst of all for Worp, who was ordered by Picard to indulge in some purposeless leisure, and chose to join his son Alexander on the holodeck as sheriff and deputy, with period adept Troi as mysterious stranger, in Deadwood, a Wild West evocation, in which two Data-like villains appear, also father and son, with daunting android abilities and no regular computer-restraint.. Movie Trivia

A holodeck character is referred to "The butcher of Bozeman" , another reference to Brannon Braga's hometown.

The title refers to the movie Per un pugno di dollari (1964) or A Fistful of Dollars, directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood.

During the scenes in the Old West, the musical score makes many references to Ennio Morricone, the award winning composer of many Westerns, including _A Fistful of Dollars (1964)_. In the first scene, the flute motif plays the first three chords from _The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)_.

Picard's flute from The Inner Light reappears here, and once more later in the season.

The backing of Alexander's game he plays in his quarters was made from 5.25" floppy drive face plates.

The production staff had very little time to make this episode. Patrick Stewart asked that all of the sets be set up at night, so they could catch every portion of daylight shooting.

The original title was The Good, the Bad and the Klingon.

The original story involved a greedy land baron, but producer Ira Steven Behr suggested the plot pay homage to Rio Bravo (1959) instead.

In an interview with Patrick Stewart, he claimed he watched the film Shane (1953) for inspiration when making a Western. A scene from Shane was taken and copied (when Alexander looks out the bottom of the Saloon Doors.)

A scene cut for time included a homage to The Ransom of Red Chief, with Alexander as the testy captive.

The first Trek episode written by Robert Hewitt Wolfe. Later to become a prominent writer on the soon to begin Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993).

When playing Durango, Marina Sirtis tried to blow smoke rings but 'Michael Dorn' cut her off and said "Stop it! Don't be funnier than me, this is my show!" That may explain why Deanna blows smoke in his face instead.

Patrick Stewart, out of excitement to direct this episode, got sunburn after forgetting to put on sunblock while shooting the outdoor scenes.

Although Brent Spiner enjoyed playing all the villains in this episode, he was most comfortable playing the female bartender.

This episode has a couple of similarities with the sci-fi Western series The Adventures of Brisco County Jr (1993-1994). John Pyper-Ferguson had a recurring role in that show, as a slightly less competent outlaw then the one he plays here. They both combine science-fiction with a standard Western adventure. And Deanna's outfit looks remarkably similar to the one Brisco wore.

Movie Goofups

Revealing mistakes: When Frank and Eli Hollander (at this point both played by Data) are talking at the prison on the holodeck Data's arm seems to be cut off when he leaves. This is due to the split-screen technique used to show both Datas in the same frame.

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Frank Hollander visits his son in the jail, he inquires as to the identity of "the stranger" (Counselor Troi), to which his son Eli replies that he doesn't know, as she hasn't stated it. This is incorrect. Earlier in the saloon, Worf's son Alexander, in front of Eli, told Worf when Troi appeared that "I asked Counselor Troi to join us". Later on, just before Frank arrived at the jail to visit Eli, Worf- in plain earshot of Eli sitting in his cell- referred to Troi as "Counselor" , at which Troi loudly reminded Worf that her name was "Durango" (the imaginary western character she is playing while in the Holodeck).

Errors in geography: Although the program takes place in Deadwood, South Dakota, a map of Arizona can be seen in Worf's office.

Movie Quotes

Lt. Commander Data: Spot, you are disrupting my ability to work.
Spot: [jumping on Data's desk] Meow.
Lt. Commander Data: Vamoose, ya little varmint!
Alexander Rozhenko: Saddle up, father!
Lieutenant Worf: [on the holodeck] Where are we?
Alexander Rozhenko: Deadwood. 19th century Earth - the Ancient West.
Lieutenant Worf: What is our function here?
Alexander Rozhenko: You are the sheriff, and I am the deputy.
Annie: What'll you have?
Lieutenant Worf: Um... Klingon firewine!
Eli: [after Worf has been slapped by Annie] You sure got a way with women, sheriff.
Eli: I've killed 23 men, sheriff. One more ain't gonna make much of a difference. 'course... shootin' someone as ugly as you couldn't be considered a crime, could it? Was you born that way - or did your momma marry an armadillo?
Frank Hollander: Where's ma boy?
Lieutenant Worf: Where have they taken my son? Where is he?
[grabs Eli at his collar]
Eli Hollander: Temper, temper, sheriff. My pa ain't gonna like it if I come home all bruised.
Lieutenant Worf: [when getting involved in a saloon brawl] I'm beginning to see the appeal of this program!
[Eli Hollander shoots at his own wanted poster]
Eli: If I ever find the varmint that drew this, he'll be sorry he ever put pen to paper. I'm ten times uglier than that, ain't I?
Counselor Deanna Troi: [playing her role as the mysterious stranger] Durango! I'm called Durango!
Lieutenant Worf: Yes, er - Counselor Durango...
[Dr. Crusher asks Picard to take part in her play]
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: I really don't have the time it would take to learn a part, and... anyway, I'm not much of an actor.
Doctor Beverly Crusher: That's no problem.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: [surprised] Oh?
Doctor Beverly Crusher: Well, you wouldn't be playing one of the leads.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: [disappointed] Oh?
Doctor Beverly Crusher: It's a very small part, only two lines.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Really?
Doctor Beverly Crusher: It's the role of the butler!
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: Well, I think about it and let you know.
Doctor Beverly Crusher: You would be *wonderful*, Jean-Luc!
[La Forge is working on Data's open head]
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: I must admit, Data, I'll never get used to seeing you like this.
Lt. Commander Data: I do not understand. You are constantly working on similar electronic systems; yet their appearances do not disturb you.
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: But you're not just another electronic system.
Lt. Commander Data: Thank you, Geordi. Nor are you just another biological organism.
[after Spot has refused Data's special cat food mixture]
Lt. Commander Data: I find it extremely difficult to predict what you will find acceptable. Perhaps hunger will compel you to try it again.
[a lightly dressed woman is posing from a saloon balcony]
Lieutenant Worf: You wrote this holodeck program yourself?
Alexander Rozhenko: Well - Mr. Barclay helped a little.
Lieutenant Worf: I must have a little talk with Mr. Barclay.
[several computer systems have been corrupted with Data's personal database]
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: When can you correct the problem?
Lt. Commander Data: We are currently attempting to isolate the corrupted circuit pathways. I reckon the process should take less than two hours.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: What did you say?
Lt. Commander Data: I said the process should take less than two hours.
Commander William T. Riker: No, you said 'I reckon'.
Lt. Commander Data: According to my memory logs I did not use those words. Y'all must be mistaken.
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: There - Data, you did it again.
Lt. Commander Data: [southern accent] Did wha-t?
Commander William T. Riker: Mr. Data.
Lt. Commander Data: [southern accent] Howdy, Commander.
Commander William T. Riker: Geordi, what have you found?
Lt. Commander Data: [southern accent] Well - we figure part of my memory structure...
Lt. Commander Data: [normal voice] ... was replaced with information from the computer's recreational database.
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge: Specifically the files relating to the American 19th century West.
Commander William T. Riker: That would explain the accent.
Lt. Commander Data: [southern accent] You got it, partner.
Counselor Deanna Troi: There's a gunfighter out there who has the speed and accuracy of an android. And in two hours he's going to try to kill you.
Lieutenant Worf: You are a murderer and a thief!
Eli: A man's got to make a living.
[last lines]
Alexander Rozhenko: Father? After what happened - I guess you'll never want to go back to the Ancient West?
Lieutenant Worf: The town of Deadwood may face danger once again. If they do... they will need a sheriff - and a deputy.
Lt. Commander Data: Commander - you just sit tight. We'll have this all fixed up in time for supper.

ST:TNG:134 - "A Fistful Of Datas" (Stardate: 46271.5) - this is the 8th episode of the 6th season of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

In a welcome homage to Sergio Leone's 1964 "A Fistful Of Dollars", Alexander (again played by Brian Bonsall) convinces his father, albeit reluctantly, to join him in a holodeck simulation of the Old West (Worf as the Sheriff, Alexander as his Deputy) created by Alexander with a little help from Lt. Barclay. And they are soon joined by Counselor Troi, who loves Western stories.

At the same time, Geordi conducts an experiment with Data which causes a computer malfunction that creates a murderous outlaw in the Old West program that looks just like Data! And not only that, when Worf tries to end the program, he can't as the safety device also fails, and other characters start looking like Data!

Watch this exciting holodeck adventure with great performance(s) by Brent Spiner as multiple characters, and a fitting ending as the Enterprise "rides off" into the sunset!

Trivia note: we see Picard playing with the flute he got in "The Inner Light". Also, Geordi is attempting to grow another beard. Also, we hear Data's "Ode To Spot" again, as well as see Spot the cat.

When the Enterprise crew are enjoying a welcome bit of time off Worf and Alexander enter the Holodeck and become the Sheriff and his Deputy in the old west. In Engineering Geordi and Data are experimenting with a new link up for Data to access problems when the main computer isn't working properly. The experiment goes awry and the ship goes haywire producing poetry on some of the padds and the replicators start producing cat food! On the holodeck all Worf and Alexander's adversaries start looking like Data. This gives Brent Spiner a real chance to stretch again, the guy is brilliant on both the holodeck and back on the Enterprise where the real Data starts acting like a character from the old west which is a good laugh, especially seeing the crew's reaction to it! On the holodeck Worf must find a way to beat his enemies who all have not only Data's looks, but his abilities too. Worf, through a bit of genius, is victorious. The last scene on the holodeck is a howl! The closing scene is nice and we get to see Worf in a rare grin!
